The human heart, as we all know, is undoubtedly the most important organ in the human body. It is located behind and slightly towards the left of the breast bone. Basically, heart, a muscle, pumps blood to every organ and every part of our body. Blood carries oxygen and other important nutrients, which our body needs to stay healthy and keep functioning properly. There are four main functions of the human heart. It pumps oxygenated blood throughout our body as well as delivers hormones and other importantnutrients to different parts of our body. Also, it receives deoxygenated blood and sends it to the lungs to load the blood with oxygen.
The heart is responsible for pumping blood via the circulatory system, which is important to stay alive. Therefore, it is mandatory to keep the heart healthy and avoid deadly heart diseases, such as heart attack. A heart attack is basically the blockage of the arteries from a sudden blood clot. Over the years, cholesterol, specifically LDL or bad cholesterol can narrow the walls of our arteries and eventually block them. The blocked arteries then prevent blood from reaching our heart, brain and other organs. This can lead to a heart attack or heart failure as well as stroke. That’s why it is recommended to get a medical checkup done to know the levels of cholesterol in our blood and take the important steps to keep it under control.
Lipid test for the heart is basically a complete cholesterol test. This test is used to measure the amount of HDL or good cholesterol and LDL or bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides in our blood. The report of lipid test for heart gives away significant information about the risk of developing many cardiovascular diseases including heart attack and heart failure. There is a set of test which are conducted under the lipid test for the heart. They include total cholesterol check, HDL cholesterol test, LDL cholesterol test, non HDL cholesterol check, LDL/HDL ratio, triglycerides test, etc.
Total Cholesterol Checkup – This is the measurement of the amount of cholesterol in our blood. A high level of cholesterol increases the risk of developing heart diseases. Ideally, the total cholesterol should be below 200 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 5.2 millimoles per litre of blood.
LDL or Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Test – This is known as the bad cholesterol. If there is too much LDL cholesterol present in the blood, it can cause build up in the arteries. Over time, the condition worsens and it limits the blood flow. These build-ups sometimes can become so hard, that it cracks and lead to a major problem with our heart and blood vessel. In lipid test for heart, the LDL cholesterol level should come less than 130 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 3.4 millimoles per litre of blood.
HDL or High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Test – This is the good cholesterol because it helps the LDL cholesterol to reach the liver, where it is broken down and eventually gets removed from the body. HDL cholesterol helps to keep the arteries open and facilitates free blood flow. If you are a male, your HDL cholesterol level should come over 40 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 1.0 millimoles per litre and for women, and HDL level over 50 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 1.3 millimoles per litre is ideal.
Triglycerides Measurement – Triglycerides are different from cholesterol, but it is also a type of lipid. Triglycerides are found in our blood and high levels of triglycerides indicate that our regular diet consists of more calories than our body can burn. The high amount of triglycerides in the blood increases the risk of heart disease. In lipid test for heart, the triglyceride level should come less than 150 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 1.7 millimoles per litre.
Non-HDL Cholesterol Checkup – The difference between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol is known as non HDL cholesterol or non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Non HDL cholesterol is basically all the bad cholesterol present in our blood. The higher your non HDL cholesterol, the more your risk of heart disease increases. Ideally, the non HDL cholesterol should come less than 130 milligrams per deciliter of blood or 3.37 millimoles per litre.

Why get Tested for Lipid Profile
Anyone above 30 Years of age specially over weight people, people not doing any kind of regular exercise must go for Lipid Profile test every 6 month or at least once in year. This will help you to know if your cholesterol is increasing or not. Based on that you can change your lifestyle.
Cholesterol is basically a type of fat, which is present in our body. Everyone has cholesterol, because it is required to make our body function properly. Cholesterol is produced in the liver. This fatty substance is useful to protect nerves and create cell tissue and certain hormones. There are few external sources of cholesterol, such as our food. Eggs, meats and dairy type of foods are rich in cholesterol. As we said, cholesterol is important for our body, but too much cholesterol is bad for our health. High levels of cholesterol in the blood raise the risk of buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in artery walls, coronary heart disease, chest pain, heart attack, stroke, etc.
There are two types of cholesterol present in our blood – good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Then there is also triglyceride, which is not cholesterol, but a type of lipid. High cholesterol level basically indicates high levels of LDL or low density lipoprotein cholesterol in the blood. This type of cholesterol, over the time, creates build ups in the arteries and reduces the blood flow. Hence, it is very important to check the levels of cholesterol regularly by undergoing lipid test for heart.
The terrifying truth is that high cholesterol does not show any symptoms. That’s why most of the people remain unaware that their cholesterol levels are too high. Therefore, it is very important to find out your cholesterol levels.
When to get Tested for Lipid Profile
Your doctor might ask you to undergo lipid test for heart, depending on your age, sex, lifestyle habits, diet, weight etc. There are certain factors that increase our risk of heart diseases. They are –
* Having a family history of heart diseases
* Habit of smoking
* Suffering from obesity (having a BMI of over 30)
* Low HDL levels
* Being diagnosed with hypertension
* Have diabetes
If you have any of these risk factors, you must get yourself checked.
Preparation for Lipid Profile
* You should not eat for 8-10 hours before undergoing lipid test for heart, as food can temporarily change the levels of cholesterol in your blood.
* You can drink water, but no other fluids are permitted because they can affect the cholesterol levels temporarily.
* It is a good idea to schedule your test for first thing in the morning so you don’t have to fast during the day.
* Inform your doctor if you’re taking any OTC drugs, prescription medications, or any herbal supplements. Certain medications can affect the LDL levels, and you may be asked to stop taking medications or change your dose prior to lipid test for heart.
Controlling or lowering the cholesterol levels is must if you want to keep your heart healthy and increase your lifespan. Some of the best ways to do so is to change your diet, eat low-salt foods, exercise, quit smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, reducing stress, etc. However, before everything else, we must get to know about our cholesterol levels.
