What Determines an Individual’s Blood Group?
Before finding that out lets understand the concept of blood grouping.
The two crucial classifications used for understanding blood groups in human beings are ABO and Rhesus factor. We have certain molecules present on our red blood cells which are called as antigens. They are antigens belonging to ABO system or the Rh antigens.
What is ABO Blood Group System?
- When A antigens are present on the surface of red blood cells then yours is A blood group and B-antibodies.
- When B antigens are present on the surface of red blood cells then yours is B blood group and B-antibodies.
- When antigen A and B are present on the surface of red blood cells then yours is AB blood group and neither A or B antibodies.
- When A and B antigens are absent on the surface of red blood cells then yours is O blood group and both antibodies A and B.
What is Rh Group System ?
Rh group system describes the type of blood i.e. Rh positive or negative which is generally mentioned as A+ OR A-. It plays a very important role during pregnancy as there can be complications when the mother’s blood is Rh negative and baby has Rh positive blood. Mother starts producing antibodies to babies blood and it can prove fatal. Generally the Rh positive group is dominant over the negative one.
If the Rh antigen is present then the blood group is positive.
If the Rh antigen is absent then the blood group is negative.
So when both parents have NEGATIVE groups, the baby will be always NEGATIVE, otherwise they can be POSITIVE/NEGATIVE.
